in service for the vessel Polarstern

On the only German research icebreaker Polarstern of the Alfred Wegener Institute, NHC Northern Helicopter supports climate research in Arctic and Antarctic regions with research and transport flights

On Behalf of Science

On Behalf of Science

The tasks of our helicopter pilots during the individual research projects are diverse. For example, the helicopters make it possible to cover a large area with electromagnetic ice thickness measurements. During which, the measuring device (EM-Bird) hovers above the ice as an external load of the helicopter.

During supply flights of the Neumayer Station III in Antarctica, which is inhabited all year round, our helicopters also transport sensitive equipment that has to be brought from the vessel to the station without causing vibrations. In addition, they are on standby when people need to be brought to the ship quickly.

What our clients say

„Helicopter operations in polar regions under expedition conditions require a reliable and competent partner. We have found this partnership for our helicopter operations on the Polarstern with the company NHC. Pilots and technicians consider themselves part of an expedition, and through their experience and interest in research support the science on board with the highest commitment.“

Dr. Ingo Schewe

Scientific Coordinator for the research vessels Polarstern and Heincke at the Alfred-Wegener-Institut, Helmholtz-Center for Polar and Ocean Research (AWI)

„With NHC, the shipping company F.Laeisz has a reliable partner for the operation and maintenance of our helicopters. Even under the unique operating conditions on board the Polarstern, in the challenging polar regions, we feel our helicopters are in good and safe hands. The cooperation with NHC is very professional and pleasant.“
